Squishy Face Frenchie Grooming Tips

Chase

French Bulldogs are beloved members of the family. As with all dogs, they need regular grooming to stay healthy and happy. There are a few modifications to standard pet care practices that are unique to the French Bulldog breed. If you’re a Frenchie owner, here are some squishy-face grooming tips to keep your pup looking and feeling their best.

Brushing

Since French Bulldogs have short, smooth coats, they don’t require a whole lot of brushing compare to other breeds. However, regular brushing is still important to help keep their coats clean and free of dirt, matting, and tangles. Brushing will also help remove excessive dander and dead hair. Common practice is to brush your Frenchie at least once a week. Select a soft bristle brush which suites your personal preference as far as aesthetics are concerned.

Bathing

French Bulldogs don’t need to be bathed too often. In fact, bathing excessive bathing can dry out their skin and cause irritation. Generally, you should bathe your Frenchie every few months, or when they get particularly dirty. Use a mild shampoo and make sure to rinse out all of the soap from their coat. Also, make sure to dry them promptly and thoroughly. Frenchie’s can catch a chill rather easily on account of their relatively small body mass.

Nail Trimming

Keeping your Frenchie’s nails trimmed will avoid discomfort and potential injury. If you hear a clicking noise as your pup walks on concrete then it is likely time for a trim. French Bulldogs have strong nails, so you may need to use a special nail trimmer designed for dogs. If you’re not comfortable trimming your pup’s nails, you can always take them to a groomer.

Dental Care

Just like humans, French Bulldogs require regular dental care to keep their teeth and gums healthy. According to the AKC Canine Health Foundation, he most common disease in adult dogs is periodontal disease. The general recommendation is to brush their teeth at least once a week with a toothbrush and pet-safe toothpaste. You can also give them specially made dental chews or treats to help clean their teeth.

Ear Cleaning

French Bulldogs have rather large ears that can easily trap dirt, debris, and moisture. It’s important to regularly clean your pup’s ears to help prevent infection. You can do this with a soft cloth or cotton ball dampened with warm water. Make sure to only clean the outer part of the ear and never push anything into the ear canal. Again, if you are uncomfortable doing this yourself then your local groomer should be more than happy to take care of them for you.

Wrinkle & Tail Pocket Cleaning

The adorable, squishy wrinkle-face of Frenchie’s needs special attention to make sure your pal doesn’t develop skin conditions within the folds of the skin on their face. Their tears drain into the wrinkles which keeps them moist making these wrinkles a perfect, warm, wet place for yeast and bacteria to grow. Use a pet friendly wipe to clean out their wrinkles. Also, don’t forget to clean their tail pocket. If you have ever seen a bulldog wiggling their bums on the floor, it could be a sign of irritation from a dirty tail pocket. It is not the most pleasant of tasks but it is necessary. So be sure to keep your pups wrinkles hygienic, both face and tush!
